Tellraw & Command JSON Generator FAQ

Can't find what you're looking for?

  • ?

What's the difference between tellraw, title, and bossbar?

Tellraw prints a line in chat. Title/subtitle shows large text in the middle of the screen, and actionbar shows a line just above the hotbar. Bossbar adds a persistent bar at the top of the screen with its own text and progress meter.

  • ?

Why does the sign command use /give instead of /setblock?

Giving a pre-written sign as an item is easier to test and hand out than editing a block already placed in the world. If you'd rather edit an existing sign, use the generated JSON inside a /setblock ... {BlockEntityTag:{...}} command instead.

  • ?

Does copy_to_clipboard work on every version?

It's a newer click event and won't do anything on older server or client versions. If you need broad compatibility, use suggest_command instead, which has been supported for years.

  • ?

Can I nest a hover tooltip inside another tooltip?

No, and neither does vanilla Minecraft. A hover event's tooltip is plain formatted text, item info, or entity info, not another interactive component.

  • ?

Will this work on Bedrock Edition?

No, this generator outputs Java Edition's text component JSON. Bedrock's /tellraw uses a different rawtext format with no color, click, or hover fields at all, formatting there is done with legacy section-sign codes typed directly into the text.
