Minecraft Inventory & Stack Calculator
Work out stacks, leftovers, and slots in one box, or pick a real container and see exactly how much it holds: chest, barrel, shulker box, and more.
Planning a big storage build?
Make sure your server can keep up.
Big sorters and mega-bases lean hard on chunk loading and TPS. Sparked Host runs on NVMe storage and Ryzen CPUs so a full storage room doesn't slow everyone else down.
What is a stack?
A stack is just a group of the same item sitting in one inventory slot. Instead of 64 cobblestone taking up 64 slots, they take up one, up to the item's stack size. Once a slot is full, the next item spills into a new slot, which is why a huge haul of loot can eat through your inventory faster than you'd expect.
Stack sizes explained: 64, 16, and 1
Stack size is a property of the item, not a setting you choose. Most blocks and items stack to 64. A smaller set of items (snowballs, eggs, ender pearls, signs, and a handful of others) only stacks to 16. And anything with durability, like tools, armor, and most enchanted books, doesn't stack at all, so its stack size is 1. If you're not sure, check the item in-game. The calculator above works with any of the three, or a custom size.
How to calculate stacks (worked example)
Say you've got 2,500 cobblestone. Divide by the stack size (64) and round down: 2,500 ÷ 64 = 39 full stacks, with 4 left over. That's 40 inventory slots once you count the partial stack. Going the other way, 5 stacks plus 32 leftover is (5 × 64) + 32 = 352 total items. The calculator above does this instantly in either direction.
Container capacity, at a glance
Slot counts for every storage block in the game, and roughly what they hold at the default stack size of 64. Use the container calculator above for other stack sizes, or to add shulker boxes into the mix.
| Container | Slots | Items at stack 64 |
|---|---|---|
| Double Chest | 54 | 3,456 |
| Chest | 27 | 1,728 |
| Barrel | 27 | 1,728 |
| Shulker Box | 27 | 1,728 |
| Ender Chest | 27 | 1,728 |
| Hopper | 5 | 320 |
| Dispenser / Dropper | 9 | 576 |
| Furnace / Smoker / Blast Furnace | 3 | N/A |
| Player Inventory | 36 | 2,304 |
Sizing a storage room or sorter
Once you know how many items you're dealing with, the container calculator above tells you how many chests, barrels, or shulker boxes to build for. That's handy for planning a sorter, a mega-base storage room, or a shipment between bases. If your Minecraft server is starting to strain under a build that size, that's usually a hosting problem, not a redstone one.

How many items are in a stack?
Most blocks and items stack to 64. A smaller group (things like snowballs, eggs, ender pearls, and signs) stacks to 16. Anything with durability, like tools, armor, and most enchanted books, doesn't stack at all (a stack size of 1).
- ?
How do I calculate how many stacks I have?
Divide your total item count by the stack size and round down to get full stacks; whatever's left over is the leftover. For example, 2,500 items at a stack size of 64 is 39 full stacks with 4 left over, or 40 inventory slots in total once you count the partial stack.

How many items fit in a double chest?
A double chest has 54 slots. At a stack size of 64, that's 3,456 items. A single chest, barrel, or ender chest has 27 slots (1,728 items at stack size 64).
- ?
How many items fit in a shulker box?
A shulker box has 27 slots, the same as a single chest, so it holds 1,728 items at stack size 64. Unlike a chest, a shulker box keeps its contents when you break it, which is what makes it useful for shipping items between bases.
- ?
Do shulker boxes multiply a chest's storage?
Yes. Fill a chest's 27 slots with shulker boxes and each one adds another 27 slots, for 27 x 27 = 729 effective slots. This works in ender chests too. It doesn't work by putting a shulker box inside another shulker box, though; that's the one container a shulker box can't go in.

How many double chests do I need for 10,000 items?
At the default stack size of 64, a double chest holds 3,456 items, so 10,000 items needs 3 double chests (2 full, with room to spare in the third). Use the container calculator above for any other item count or stack size.
