How Nether portal linking works

One block in the Nether is eight blocks in the Overworld. When you step through a portal, the game converts your coordinates (Overworld ÷ 8, rounded down, or Nether × 8) and looks for an existing portal near that point. It picks the nearest one by 3D distance, so height counts too. If none is in range, it builds a new portal.

Why your portal takes you to the wrong place

Almost always, another portal is closer to the converted point than the one you meant to reach. This is common on shared servers, where many players build portals close together. In the Nether, portals within 16 blocks of each other (Java) can steal each other's trips.

How to fix a mislinked portal

Enter the coordinates above to find the spot the game aims at. Build your portal closer to that spot than any other portal, or remove the portal that's winning. Running a shared world? A Minecraft server you control lets admins tidy up stray portals.

Nether Portal Calculator FAQ

  • ?

How do I calculate Nether portal coordinates?

Divide your Overworld X and Z by 8 and round down to get the matching Nether X and Z. Going back, multiply Nether X and Z by 8. Y stays the same. Negative numbers round toward negative infinity, so -1290 becomes -162.

  • ?

Why does my Nether portal take me to the wrong place?

The game sends you to the nearest existing portal within its search range, measured in 3D, and builds a new one only if none is found. If another portal is closer than the one you intended, it wins, even if it's a long way from where you expected.

  • ?

How far does the game search for a portal?

On Java Edition it searches 128 blocks around the destination in the Overworld and 16 blocks in the Nether. On Bedrock Edition it searches 128 blocks in both. The search area is a square, not a circle.

  • ?

How do I fix a portal that links to the wrong one?

Move or remove the portal that's winning, or rebuild your portal closer to the converted coordinates than any other. Use the calculator to get the exact spot to build on, and keep other portals outside the search range.

  • ?

Does Y level matter for portal linking?

Yes. The game picks the portal with the smallest 3D distance, so a portal at a very different height can lose to a farther-away one at the right height. Portals can't be built above Y 127 in the Nether.

  • ?

Can I paste my F3+C coordinates?

Yes. Press F3+C in Java Edition, then paste into any box. The calculator reads the coordinates, rounds down to the block, and uses the dimension in the string.
